Great Barrier Island - coastal roadPosted by kiwisa (North Shore, New Zealand) on 21 July 2011 in Landscape & Rural. Great Barrier Island is the fourth largest New Zealand island situated 100 kilometres north-east of central Auckland in the outer Hauraki Gulf. With an area of 285 square kilometers, the island was initially exploited for its minerals (silver and copper) and kauri trees. However no mining continues today and the permanent population is under 900 people who survive mostly on tourism and farming.

@Anina Botes: It's fabulous Anina, check out Sealink's website they have some great winter specials:) @Tamara: Thanks Tamara, it is like stepping back in time about 50 years;) @David: This is remote and truly 'Clean Green" NZ. Yip save for a visit, it would be great if Am3 would do a 'get together' down here. @Stephen: Thanks Stephen, as I've done a little travel through Australia (mainly Victoria) I know what you are saying. The colors and landscape is totally different. @Mijo: Thanks for your comment and visit. Have enjoyed your Avignon visit. @Gary: Heaven on earth:) @Truels: Thanks Truels for your visit.....I always enjoy your travel shots too. |
