Rugby World Cup festivities

Posted by
kiwisa (North Shore, New Zealand) on 15 September 2011 in Documentary & Street.

Kapa haka is the 'cultural dance' of Maori people to express their heritage and cultural identity through song and dance. Piupiu are the flax skirts worn by kapa haka groups. Women have long piupiu, men have short piupiu made out of flax. A korowai is a cloak decorated with feathers. Usually people of high rank within a tribe will wear Korowai. When it is used during kapa haka the 2 kaea, (female leader, male leader), will usually adorn themselves with a Korowai.
